WASHINGTON – Laphonza Butler is scheduled to be sworn in to fill the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California.
Manish Bapna, president and CEO of NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), made the following statement:
“Laphonza Butler is a values-driven leader who has worked at the intersection of labor, justice and poverty issues for more than a decade. She has a proven record of standing up for workers, women and reproductive rights. Much like the pioneering Sen. Feinstein, Butler is a historic figure, the second Black woman, and the first openly gay woman, California has sent to the U.S. Senate.
“Her appointment adds another voice for climate action and equity to the Senate and makes another stride toward a body that looks more like the country it purports to represent.”
