On Tuesday June 28, Councilmember Brianne Nadeau of Washington, DC’s Ward 1 became the first local elected official to add her name to a letter urging Walmart to go solar.

This summer Environment America Research & Policy Center is reaching out to local officials from communities that host Walmart, educating them about the benefits local renewable energy generation like rooftop solar can bring their communities and asking them to urge Walmart, the retailer with the most rooftop solar potential in America, to commit to putting solar on all of its available roof space by 2035.

Rooftop solar provides pollution-free energy. When paired with energy storage, rooftop solar panels can also help improve grid resiliency in the face of blackouts and reduce the cost of electricity for consumers. The sprawling, flat, and unobstructed roofs and parking lots of America’s big box stores are the ideal places for solar.

Local elected officials have until June 21st to add their name to the letter and can do so here.
